Domestic violence victim’s report to police 'overheard by perpetrator'

Malta Independent Thursday, 5 June 2014, 12:29 Last update: about 11 years ago

A victim of domestic violence, who went to report the perpetrator to the police, was overheard by her aggressor who was allegedly listening in without her knowledge, Nationalist MP Claudette Buttigieg said in Parliament on Wednesday.

Parliament was discussing the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.

Ms Buttigieg said that it all started when the policeman asked the woman submitting the report if she was feeling hot and if she preferred if he opened the police station’s window for some fresh air.

The perpetrator, according to Ms Buttigieg, was outside the police station window listening in.

When she went back home, her perpetrator allegedly beat her black and blue, Ms Buttigieg said.

According to Ms Buttigieg, this story emerged during interviews the Social Affairs Committee she forms part of held with a number of domestic violence victims.

The victim refused to be filmed and preferred that her identity be protected but the victim’s claims were recorded.

This morning this media organisation sent questions to the police asking if they will be investigating this allegation. The police communications unit has acknowledged receipt of our questions.
