Zabbar council may be on the verge of being dissolved

Malta Independent Saturday, 12 July 2014, 09:30 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Zabbar local council may have to be dissolved after PL councillors who attended a meeting at the PL headquarters on Wednesday evening to discuss the issues that led to the resignation of the mayor did not come to terms on the way forward.

The Malta Independent online on Wednesday reported that a meeting was to take place between the five PL councillors and Toni Abela, the PL deputy leader for party affairs and who is also responsible for PL councillors.

This portal also reported that a quarrel ensued between Dr Abela and Labour Party stalwart Ronnie Pellegrini on the conclusions of the Board of Local Governance concerning now former mayor Quinton Scerri. Mayor Quinton Scerri resigned on Wednesday following the board’s conclusions.

Wednesday’s meeting was held after the board of government report exposed PL councillors failed to attend three consecutive meetings in the space of six months. Some even missed as many as eight meetings, sources said.

A councillor is obliged to attend all committee meetings, but if a he or she misses three consecutive meetings within a period of six months without a justifiable reason, the council secretary is obliged to inform the director of local councils of the councillor’s behaviour and a decision is then taken by the director.

Sources said that the majority of the PL Zabbar councillors are battling it out on who should be made mayor amid the possibility of further resignations.
