Malta Independent Friday, 25 July 2014, 11:28 Last update: about 11 years ago

The leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil said that more than 2,000 individuals signed a petition kickstarted by the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji with the aim of getting the government to continue negotiations with University lecturers.

Dr Busuttil, who has signed the petition, said that students should never be used as a political football especially when students were awaiting exam results.

He urged the government to sit down and discuss the issue in the interest of students, which should come first before anything else.

Yesterday, this portal reported that the industrial battle between University lecturers and the government, which is keeping around 6,000 students waiting for their exam results, is over a meagre €8 million over five years.

This is the increase that University lecturers are demanding in the revision of the collective agreement, sources close to the University of Malta Academic Staff Association (UMASA) and the Malta Union of Teachers told this newsroom.
