This morning, the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and Mr Preca, visited the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, where they were welcomed by the Rector of the University, Rik Torfs.  Mr Ray Azzopardi, Ambassador for Malta to the Kingdom of Belgium, accompanied the delegation during the visit.  The Catholic University of Leuven and the University of Malta have had various agreements for student exchange, particularly in the field of medicine, and have co-operated in areas of medical specialisation, including oncology.  Recently, the Universities are co-operating in the area of reproductive health.  The possible collaboration in other fields, including science and technology, was also discussed. The President of Malta highlighted the advantages that Malta offered to the students, including the use of the English language, the rates offered to students coming from European Union Member States and the cost of living in Malta.  The President and the Deans of various Faculties at the University discussed the possibility of collaboration also with the President’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society. The delegation had the opportunity to see manuscripts about Malta and a map of the Maltese Islands dating back to the eighteenth century housed at the beautiful library of the University. The Catholic University of Leuven is said to be the oldest university in Belgium and currently has 55,000 students.
