The annual European Mobility Week will this year be held between the 16 and 22 of September, Environment Minister Leo Brincat announced this morning.
Addressing a press conference, Mr Brincat said that the aim of such a week is to raise awareness about the need to reduce air and noise pollution from our roads, encourage people to use alternative methods of transport. He added that living in a clean environment is the fundamental right of each and every individual. The minister said that along with the rest of the EU member states, Malta is aiming at reducing 20% of emissions by 2020, aiming towards a low carbon economy.
Furthermore, the government is developing draft policies to address such environmental challenges; however Mr Brincat insisted that each individual should give his contribution.
Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said that over the past years, Malta has seen a substantial increase in vehicles registered, resulting in more pollution and traffic congestions, which in turn serve as a health hazard. In Malta, there are over 300,000 cars. He said that the government will be working to ensure a more efficient transport system to encourage more people to make use of such a service.
MEPA are funding €70,000 which will be partly used by local councils and NGOs taking part in the European Mobility week, and partly to implement a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.
