Conflicts in Libya ended up being the subject of a heated argument between two Libyan students, with both suffering grievous injuries, the court heard today.

Sofyan Salem, 22, and Fathi Ahmed Al Gamudi, 29, were sentenced to 18 months suspended for 3 years after pleading guilty to inflicting grievous injuries upon each other while arguing about the situation in Libya. The incident happened on 9 August at around 5.30am, when both men started throwing glass bottles at each other, resulting in both men having to be hospitalised.

It is understood that the two students originate from different tribes of Libya, but they are currently studying in Malta.

The court heard that both students are first time offenders and are willing to forgive each other, and this was merely an unfortunate incident. Magistrate Miriam Hayman said that although it is unfortunate that both men have a war ongoing in their home country, they should not bring conflicts here, and should rather treasure peace.
