A 33-year-old man today was sentenced to seven months in prison, after he was found guilty of stealing from a 73-year-old woman.

The incident occurred on 19 September, at around midday, when the accused, Stephen Nappa, stole €80 in cash, belonging to 73-year-old Mary Chircop.

At the time, Mrs Chircop was crossing the road in Triq Kanonku, in Hamrun, using her walking aide.

Mr Nappa went to help her cross the road, and to do so, he placed his own bag in her own, and as soon as they made it to the other side of the road, he ran off with both their possessions.

The court heard that Mr Nappa has a drug abuse problem, and ordered that he undergoes rehabilitation treatment within the corrective facilities at Kordin.

Inspector James Grech prosecuted. Magistrate Doreen Clarke presided.
