Wrongly jailed man: Former wife’s case stalled as AG files appeal on daughter’s court ruling

The case of the former wife of a man who had been wrongly jailed was stalled today after the Attorney General filed an appeal on the court's ruling regarding their daughter's case, which had been heard separately.

Emmanuel Camilleri had spent time in prison after being found guilty of abusing his daughter, whose testimony later turned out to be false. The woman, Lisa May Camilleri, is charged with perjury.

The AG is arguing that the court should have listened to evidence before deciding on the case. The AG was referring to what may have led to Leanne Camilleri, the daughter, to change her version of events when she constantly claimed her father abused her but then changed course. Leanne was given three years' probation and community work.

The appeal was made by the AG because doubts have been raised on whether Leanne may have felt pressured as a result of the exposure the case received in the media and this is why she may have changed her version. Her father had forgiven his daughter for her false accusations but had said that she should be held responsible for her actions.

Police Inspectors Sandro Camilleri and James Grech prosecuted. Dr Martin Fenech was defence counsel while Dr Tonio Azzopardi appeared parte civile for Emmanuel Camilleri.

The case is set to continue on 3 December.
