Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici says it's encouraging that 32% of Maltese not in favour of EU membership

Friday, 7 November 2014, 12:18 Last update: about 10 years ago

Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici, president of the Campaign for National Independence, said that the latest official opinion poll held in Malta through the European Union in order to establish who is in favour of Malta joining EU now 10 years later showed that 32% are not in favour.  This is very encouraging for CNI Malta considering it was the only movement against EU accession whilst both parties even the PL changed view.  This is not only happening in Malta but throughout the EU because the Eurosceptics are on the rise.  People do not like EU policies and decisions which are resulting in increase in unemployment, poverty and recession.

Interviewed on Smash TV, Dr Mifsud Bonnici also tackled the issue of government's weight when it comes voting in any EU decision.  Malta is such a small country that by means of qualified majority if 15 countries that make up 65% of the total of EU population are in favour it would be irrelevant what other countries like Malta agree or not.  This shows clearly that Malta's presence within the EU is insignificant.  Also there is a big difference between what the Maltese people want and what EU governments decide.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici, a former Labour Prime Minister of Malta, assured the Maltese people that we need not worry regarding any loss of business if Malta was to back out of EU because, either through an agreement like Switzerland and Norway with the EU or by dealing with any of the 200 countries in the world, Malta can still generate business. In fact Malta had around 40 German factories prior to our EU membership and this indicates clearly that Malta had the economic potential years back on the other hand during the last 10 year many manufacturing industries had to close down because of EU regulations.  This generated a substantial amount of unemployment which eventually is leading to poverty. Dr Mifsud Bonnici emphasised that another big loss for Malta was that we had to make up for all EU countries mishaps and recessions because we are obliged through EU regulations.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici discussed the issue that Malta lately was billed €13,000,000 extra by the EU when you consider that we have already contributed €68,000,000 last year.  He reminded the Maltese people that over the next 5 years Malta would be contributing €500,000,000. Corruption within the European Union is also taking over to such an extent that large amounts of money are being wasted instead of invested to create jobs for EU youths.  Unemployment rates amongst youths in countries like Italy, Spain and Greece are increasing.

The CNI President also mentioned the fact that EU nationals are coming to Malta much more than the Maltese have opportunities to go abroad. This is creating job losses because all around Malta we are surrounded with EU nationals trying to take over. EU policy regarding immigrants is also a burden to Malta because we are bound by EU regulations to give shelter to these people and accommodate them in all aspects.  This is a great burden to Malta which would be solved if we had to back out as proposed by CNI.
