Saturday, 10 January 2015, 12:27 Last update: about 10 years ago

African Media Association Malta (AMAM), comprising many Muslim journalists, condemn the recent attack in France against newspaper Charlie Hebdo by religious extremists who do not represent the Muslim ethics of compassion, tolerance and understanding.

This new NGO representing journalists from any African country, and with aims to help the migrant community in Malta, and work towards integration, supports freedom of speech and freedom of media to portray truth to the general public.

Islamic leaders have also said that the attack was "an insult to the Prophet Mohammed".

Such actions by extremists give the whole Muslim Religion a bad name and image in Malta and other nations. Father Dionysius Mintoff, at Peace Lab NGO, at Hal Far has long been a leader in human rights in Malta and as well as giving daily mass to migrants and Europeans, also supports a small mosque for Muslims in the same vicinity. Moderate Christians and Muslims can live in peace and harmony together.

Project leader of AMAM, Ahmed Nuur Ibrahim was threatened with death by Al Shabab extremists in Somalia where 18 journalist colleagues were murdered. He says"this is action against human rights and freedom of speech and is an abuse against Islam, because Islam means "Peace". Our thoughts are with the families of the murdered French journalists as well as with those who die each day in Somalia".
