Hopes that the European Commission will take migration seriously – Miriam Dalli

Wednesday, 11 February 2015, 09:25 Last update: about 10 years ago

MEP Miriam Dalli said that it is positive that, at long last, the European Commission is showing signs of a shift in its policy on migration even though this is happening after yet another tragedy and when it is clear that the policy implemented so far has failed.

Dalli welcomed the fact that the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini has called a meeting for the Commissioners’ Group on External Action to review the current European policy on migration.  “This is a step in the right direction as it promises revisions to a policy that has failed miserably.  Equally positive is the fact that migration will also be a topic of discussion on the Foreign Affairs ministers’ agenda”, stated Dalli

Miriam Dalli’s reaction came after a statement made by the Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini in Strasbourg when addressing the challenges of migration.

Dalli said that one hopes that this positive approach will not be a knee jerk reaction that fizzles out over time but a realisation that the policy adopted so far has failed and placed a disproportionate burden on a limited number of countries, most notably Malta and Italy
