Former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi today said he had no knowledge whatsoever of any irregularities taking place in Gozo.

He was speaking to the media the day after Anthony Debono, the husband of former Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, was charged in court and accused of misappropriating public funds.

Dr Gonzi, who was prime minister at the time the alleged irregularities were taking place, said that one should wait for the wheels of justice to take their course and not jump to conclusions.

He said that Mrs Debono has acted in the genuine way that she has been known for by tendering her resignation.

Asked what he would have done in the circumstances had he still been leader, Dr Gonzi said that the PN has a new leader and he took the decisions which he thought were fit.

He said he agrees with the former minister's decision to resign from the PN parliamentary group, adding that he would have done the same if it were him.

Dr Gonzi was speaking at the new Parliament building which he was invited to visit by Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil.

In his address, Dr Busuttil said that since Dr Gonzi was behind the building of the new Parliament, it was appropriate that Dr Gonzi was the first person to be invited to visit his (Busuttil's) office within the building.
