A Maltese barman from Valletta today was accused of holding his girlfriend against her will last Saturday and threatening the use of violence against her or her family.

The Court ordered a ban on the publication of the victim’s name, after the prosecution (inspector Jeffrey Scicluna) argued that she was in a vulnerable state. In turn, a ban on the accused’s name was also imposed as his name’s publication could result in revealing the identity of the victim.

The accused allegedly held his girlfriend against her will in his apartment. He is also charged with causing minor injuries to the victim, damaging the victim’s mobile phone and relapsing.

Bail was not contested by the prosecution, as long as the accused would be barred from approaching or contacting the victim and her family. In fact, bail was granted against a deposit of €1,500 and a €6,000 personal guarantee and a protection order based on the prosecution's request was also imposed.

Magistrate Josette Demicoli presided, Dr Mario Mifsud and Dr Alfred Abela appeared for the accused.
