The nursing union said that the charge nurses (nursing officers) mentioned in an article published in The Malta Independent on Sunday last week are both MUMN members.

This newsroom reported that the CEO of the St Vincent de Paul Residence (SVPR) initiated proceedings against a nursing officer (charge nurse) for negligence but failed to initiate proceedings against another nursing officer who is also a One radio disc jockey for similar reasons.

We stated that only one of the two nursing officers is an MUMN member but the MUMN has said that both nursing officers are members of the union.

Both cases involved patients who walked out of the residence after the main door of the wards were left unlocked. Nursing officers are responsible for anything that happens under their watch.

The more serious case occurred in Pope John Paul II Ward 2 under the watch of the nursing officer who is also a One disc jockey. Residents of this ward are dementia patients. The patient was found wandering in the vicinity of the Marsa horse track.

In its statement, the MUMN confirmed that it is aware of this case.

In the same article, The Malta Independent on Sunday reported that the MUMN had issued a statement where it protested with SVPR’s management – without making any reference to a particular case – regarding inequality of procedures for disciplinary cases between MUMN members and non-members.

On this point, the MUMN said that when it issued a statement on the cases involving its members, it was referring to employees pertaining to different categories of workers and not one case involving a nursing officer.
