Sliema underground carpark will create 180 spaces, Local Council is ‘sole applicant’

Monday, 25 January 2016, 14:24 Last update: about 9 years ago

The Sliema Local Council said today that the proposed three-storey underground car park and overlying garden & playground at Margaret Mortimer garden will create 180 new parking spaces. The project is to take up the same footprint of the current Margaret Mortimer garden.

The council said it wanted to clarify that it is the sole applicant and developer for the project.

“Sliema Local Council formally submitted a development application at MEPA, in its name, late in 2015. The application is currently at screening stage. Sliema Local Council has already applied for the devolution of the site at Margaret Mortimer garden to be devolved to it for the purposes of developing this project. The Department of Local Government has already consented to this, and we are currently awaiting approval from the Lands Department.

Once the MEPA permit is in hand, Sliema Local Council aims to finance this project through CPPS funding which is administered by MEPA specifically for the Sliema locality.

This project goes hand in hand with other policies and projects the Sliema Local Council has been working on to alleviate parking problems in the locality. These include the proposals which the Council is still contesting for to have a Residential Parking Scheme in place and new road design projects that shall be increasing parking spaces once approved by Transport Malta.”
