Maltese dancer takes to New York City stage

Monday, 9 May 2016, 16:02 Last update: about 9 years ago

Luke Muscat performs lead role at New York City Hudson Guild Theatre

Luke Muscat, grandson of Maltese champion waterpolo player George Muscat, will take the stage as a soloist in the premier Of Heart and Stone by Captiveflow Dance at The Hudson Guild Theatre between 26-28 May.

Luke is a founding member of Captiveflow Dance, a New York City theatrical contemporary dance company. He studied at the prestigious Alvin Ailey School on scholarship, where he performed alongside the acclaimed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre for audiences of over 2,000 people. Luke has performed internationally in Canada and America, and has made appearances in the Karikatura music video Eyes Wide Open featured in the Wall Street Journal.  Resembling his grandfather George Muscat, winner of the 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1967 Water Polo Championships in Malta (Sirens Water Polo Club), Luke associates his hard work ethic and perseverance with his instilled Maltese heritage. Much like the people of Malta, Luke has a compassionate heart and a strong sense of community. He shares his passion for the arts with the next generation as a professional dance educator in leading New York City dance conservatories (including The Ailey School, The School at The Mark Morris Dance Group and the School at Steps on Broadway) and in New York City private, public and special needs schools.

The evening's programme, Duality, features the two full length ballets On the Tip of My Tongue and Of Heart and Stone. Of Heart and Stone is a narrative piece based off the classic Medusa Myth: a woman turned hideous for her slight against a fickle and vengeful God (portrayed by Luke Muscat). Each character navigates a tangled web of romantic sins in pursuit of their own idea of "perfect love" until it constricts them all irrevocably. How does the heart grow when it reaches rock bottom?

Performances begin on Thursday, 26 May at 8pm and run until Saturday, 28 May including a 2pm Saturday matinee at the charming Hudson Guild Theatre in New York City. Performances are made possible by The Field Sponsorship and producer Ryan Savoca. Admission is $25 and can be purchased online at Eventbrite.com or at the door.
