Right to vote: TMI report throws bad light on Electoral Commission – PN

Saturday, 28 May 2016, 13:15 Last update: about 9 years ago

The Malta Independent report that revealed the Chief Electoral Commissioner knew about voting application breaches since at least last September threw bad light on the commission, which is supposed to be independent, the Nationalist Party said in a statement.

The Maltese people deserve an explanation of what is going on, especially after it was revealed that the person mostly responsible to ensure a clean voting process did not speak up about abuse that was taking place, in clear breach of the Constitution, the PN said.

What has been revealed by newspapers shows that the PN was correct to bring up the matter to public attention. In the past days, the PN has presented 91 court against contesting the eligibility of foreigners to vote in Maltese elections after purchasing Maltese citizenship. The PN is arguing that these people did not satisfy the constitutional requirements to be granted the right to vote.

Once again, a scandal has erupted in a department that falls under the responsibility of the Office of the Prime Minister, the PN said. The PM’s silence on this matters raises more questions on Castille’s involvement, it added.
