USS Harry S. Truman welcomes Home Affairs Minister, US Ambassador aboard

Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Carmelo Abela and US Ambassador to Malta G. Kathleen Hill were guests of honour during the United States Navy Aircraft Carrier Distinguished Visitor familiarization tour aboard the USS Harry S. Truman. 

Minister Abela and Ambassador Hill flew from Malta to Souda Bay, Crete, and boarded the USS Harry S. Truman, which forms part of the US Naval Forces Europe-Africa/US.

Minister Abela and Ambassador Hill welcomed the opportunity to learn about the capabilities of the US naval forces and the Global Network of Navies to provide security and stability in Europe and Africa.

The Minister and the US officials discussed issues of mutual interest, in particular security manners.

He remarked that stability in the Mediterranean region is crucial for stability in Europe and all efforts contributing in reaching this goal are commendable. 

Miniser Abela thanked the US authorities for their genuine interest in security in the Mediterranean region, as well as for their active cooperation with the Maltese authorities in a number of key areas. Moreover, the Minister also made reference to the efforts of the Armed Forces of Malta in the sphere of maritime security. Although Malta's resources are evidently not comparable to those avialable to the U.S., the Maltese authorities still make an important and significant contribution.

Minister Abela also said that the Maltese authorities look forward to further cooperation with the US, both in relation to security as well as other fields.

In brief comments, Ambassador Hill reiterated the importance of the Fleet’s mission.  She stated, “No single nation can combat global threats alone.  We must collectively work together to share information, share experiences, and work together for regional stability.”  Ambassador Hill welcomed Minister Abela’s interest in the operations of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. Sixth Fleet and his participation in the orientation visit.  She emphasized the importance of bilateral military cooperation to guarantee security and safety in the region.  Ambassador Hill said, “It is vital that Malta participate in all international discussions on current issues that have an impact on the Mediterranean region.”

Captain Ryan B. Scholl, Commanding Officer of the USS Harry S. Truman greeted the distinguished guests.  During the tour, Captain Scholl explained that the USS Harry S. Truman forms part of the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. Sixth Fleet.  He briefed the distinguished visitors about the Fleet’s mission to maintain the security of the regional maritime environment and protect the sea lanes.  Captain Scholl emphasized the importance of regional cooperation through the Global Network of Navies.  He concluded, “By pooling our resources together, we can overcome the challenges that threaten freedom and security in the global commons".
