Updated: PBS board confirms John Bundy as new CEO along with Charles Dalli as deputy

Wednesday, 3 August 2016, 07:45 Last update: about 9 years ago

The Public Broadcasting Services board have confirmed that John Bundy will be taking over as the Chief Executive Officer, as well as Charles Dalli as Deputy CEO. The Board said in their statement that they are excited that Mr Bundy will bring years of broadcasting experience to the table.

Earlier today, informed sources at Public Broadcasting Services said that the station's board will be meeting in order to rubber-stamp the naming of John Bundy as the new chief executive officer of the national broadcaster.

The news broke about the popular TV presenter last Saturday. He is set to replace Anton Attard whose contract expires next week. Mr Attard has occupied the post since August 2010.

Calls from labour diehards for Mr Attard’s removal have been abundant since the Labour Party won the 2013 election. Mr Attard once occupied the top post at Media Link, the PN's broadcasting arm at the same time Mr Bundy was the PN's most loved personality presenting daily shows on Radio 101 and Net TV and hosting the PN's mass meetings.

While refraining from directly attacking Mr Attard, the Opposition has been claiming that the national broadcaster is clearly biased towards the government in the past three years. This has been countered on numerous occasions by the Labour Party with statements that PBS was no different under previous administrations.

It is still not clear what position the PN will take with regard to Mr Bundy now that he will succeed Anton Attard. Informed sources told this newsroom that the PN reached out to John Bundy after he joined Joseph Muscat's movement before the 2013 election.

Facebook posts by some prominent PN supporters lauded Mr Bundy's appointment at PBS. On the other hand some Labour supporters complained that important posts such as PBS CEO shouldn't go to Nationalists the likes of Attard and Bundy.

Minister Owen Bonnici, in comments to The Malta Independent on Sunday,  stressed that the question as to who will be appointed the new CEO lies with the PBS board. This newsroom sent questions to Mr Attard, asking whether he was offered the opportunity to stay on as CEO, whether he wanted to continue on in the position or where he intends to go next.

He chose not to answer the questions, and said: “these are matters that appertain to the Board of Directors of PBS Ltd and announcements will be made in the coming days. I have nothing to add.”

Mr Bundy started his TV career on Smash TV but moved on to the Nationalist’s Party’s media, later to TVM, and finishing off with Labour’s One. In addition to being a TV presenter, Mr Bundy was also involved with the Labour Party 2013 campaign by presenting numerous political events.

The PBS Board of Directors is made up of Chairperson Tonio Portughese, Deputy Chairperson Albert Marshall and directors Edward Cassar Delia, Adriana Zarb Adami, Paul Vella, Claire Bonello, Frank Portelli and Tony Cassar Darien.

Mr Bundy is also very popular for the song Pajjiz tal-Mickey Mouse from the festival l-Ghanja tal-Poplu.
