Commissioner for Children visits XjenzaMania STEAM Summer School

Saturday, 6 August 2016, 08:39 Last update: about 9 years ago

The Commissioner for Children, Pauline Miceli, visited XjenzaMania held at the University of Malta’s Cottonera Resource Centre.

During this visit, Dr Josann Cutajar, the director of the CRC explained the reason behind the promotion of STEAM (Science, Technology, Arts and Maths) among 8 to 13 year olds.

Research demonstrates that during these years children start deciding which career paths to follow.  This summer school was set up in Cottonera because a number of students had relatives who had worked at the dockyard. These students might have picked up some technical and scientific knowledge through informal interactions.  The school is building on this knowledge.

Ms Miceli spoke to the students during assembly and underlined that they are the experts regarding what adults need to do to ensure that their rights are respected.

The Commissioner visited all the classes and saw the students at work during Robotics, Design and Technology, Science, Maths, English and Maltese sessions.  The school adopts a thematic approach - every week a different theme is adopted and taught through the different subjects.
