'If anyone is trying to create doubts about my loyalty, they are wrong' – Mario de Marco

Sunday, 22 January 2017, 15:13 Last update: about 8 years ago

PN Deputy Leader Mario de Marco this morning said that if anyone is trying to create doubts about his loyalty, they are wrong.

Dr de Marco was reacting to comments made earlier this week by blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia, who said that the contribution made by Dr de Marco was unimpressive. He was addressing a PN political activity.

He said that the past two years were very difficult because of his medical situation however this did not stop him from being loyal to the Party or from his duties and responsibilities. He said that that, “politics for us means serving the country. My late father, President Emeritus Guido de Marco, who was loyal to the party and country did this with love and I will follow in his footsteps.”

Dr de Marco said; “I will keep serving the party and be next to PN leader Simon Busuttil and the entire Party. Malta needs us all and I am here because the PN is the only party that can make this country better.”

Dr de Marco expressed solidarity with PN deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami and shadow ministers Jason Azzopardi and Tonio Fenech who at the moment are being targeted by the Labour Party. “My message is for us to remain focused on our mission, which is destroying corruption. The people do not deserve this. We are committed and determined to reach the finish line. This is a national fight and as former Prime Minister Edde Fenech Adami used to say, ‘sewwa jirbha zgur’ (the truth will prevail).”

PL responds

The PL said that Dr de Marco was made to change his tune after persistent attacks during the past week by blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia.

“It is clear that through his political intervention today, Dr de Marco was forced to play the same and tune as Salvu Mallia’s party, to stop internal attacks against him.”

“In the divide within Salvu Mallia’s party, Simon Busuttil is deciding who to defend, and  like he decided to defend Salvu Mallia, he is defending Jason Azzopardi who is saying that the statement by Zaren Vassallo – that he met with a minister over the Lowenbrau land - does not refer to him but to Tonio Fenech.”

“As is reported in the press, Tonio Fenech is saying that he wasn’t the minister who met with Mr Vassallo, and that if he had gone to Mr Fenech, then Mr Fenech would have sent him to Jason Azzopardi.

“The PN is in a panic, full of internal conflict which is not allowing them to take decisions based on good governance.”
