Migrant suicide: PM appeals to anyone in possession of alleged recording to come forward

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has appealed to anyone who might be in possession of an alleged recording made by a Ghanaian migrant who committed suicide to come forward with the tape.

Frederick Ofosu, 33, was found strangled with an electric cable. It is claimed that he left a recording for friends explaining that he took his own life out of despair, and that he was made to feel like a criminal. Mr Ofosu was reportedly distressed by the government’s decision to review the so-called THPn system.

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said earlier this week that Mr Ofosu had applied for assisted return to his country and appealed for everyone to stick to the facts.

Mr Abela said the tape had not been handed to the police and appealed to anyone holding the tape to come forward with it.

Speaking to journalists this afternoon, the Prime Minister renewed that appeal. “I appeal to anyone with information to come forward.  There will be no repercussions,” he assured.

“This is crucial. We are speaking about a person’s life here. A very clear accusation has been made and we cannot act as if nothing happened.”
