Spectacular Grand Harbour fireworks displays for the Vittoriosa festa

Saturday, 5 August 2017, 12:04 Last update: about 8 years ago

The annual 'La Notte di San Lorenzo' fireworks show will be held on 9 August on the occasion of the feast of St Lawrence in Vittoriosa.

As usual, the show is being organised by the 10th August Pyrotechnic Association of Vittoriosa. It will be held near the Vittoriosa Regatta Club in Kalkara Creek.

The past eight editions of the event were very well received. In past years, even an international fireworks company - Orzella Fireworks from Italy, took part.

This year's 'La Notte di San Lorenzo' will kick off at 10pm.  All those attending are encouraged to reach the 'Sally Port' at Kalkara Creek, where a sound system will be set up to accompany the pyrotechnic display.

There will also be a special light effects show and commentary by DJ Dorian Cassar.

The night kicks off with a small fireworks show synchronised to the song 'Leader of the Gang' by Gerry Glitter. This will be followed by a traditional fireworks show, including multi-break crackered shells and multi break coloured shells.  Half way through the one-by-one fireworks show there will be another pyro-musical show, this time with fireworks synchronised to the song 'Alone' by Alan Walker.

The Grand Finale will be a fantastic pyro-musical show. The first part will be synchronised to the song 'It's my Life' by Bon Jovi. Soon after, there will be the final part which this year has been given a theme.  In fact, fireworks will be synchronised to soundtracks from films shot in Malta, such as Midnight Express, Troy, Gladiator and The Count of Montekristo.

All those attending for this fireworks evening, can reach the venue via Kalkara gate and then taking the first turn on the left.   The nearby Fortini football ground will double as a parking area. Attendees are also encouraged to make use of the ferry services from Valletta to minimise traffic congestion.

From 8:30pm onwards, as a prelude to the fireworks show, the band of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Band of Balluta will play along the venue.

The Vittoriosa festa will be held on 10 August - St Lawrence Day. There will be a huge daylight fireworks show at around 7:15pm. Fireworks will continue until around 10:30pm.

The 10th August Pyrotechnic Association has prepared as a prelude, a full programme of fireworks, spread over various days.  In fact there will be fireworks shows on 31 July, 6, 7 and 8 August.

On Sunday 6 August the association will also participate in a spectacular audio visual show at Vittoriosa Main Square at 11pm.  On 9 August, following 'La Notte di San Lorenzo', there will be a ground fireworks display at the Vittoriosa Marina, at around 10:30pm.

This year, fireworks have been manufactured by D'Amato brothers and Colin Muscat and also by 6 fireworks factories; the 25th November of Zejtun, St.George of Qormi, St. Andrew's Band of Luqa, St. Joseph of Ghaxaq, St. Mary of Mqabba and Our Lady of Lourdes of Qrendi.  All shows are co-ordinated and choreographed by the 10th August Pyrotechnic Association.

These fireworks shows are being held thanks to the St. Lawrence External Festivities Committee, Olde City Pub, Cassar Ship Repair,  Sound Solutions, Audio Sound System, MCP Car Park, Alexandra Hotel, JAC Steel, Cilia Building Contractors, Fava Woodworks, Kalkara Local Council,  Melvin Degiorgio Photography, Birgu Local Council, the Local Police Authorities, Kottoner 98 FM, 1st Cospicua Scout Group, Big Bun Bakery & Confectionery, Grand Hotel, Sezzjoni Zghazagh Palmizi, Paul Attard, Mile End, Transport Malta, Roberta & Chris Pullicino, Elbros Company Ltd and also the the Members of Parliament and candidates of the last General Election -  Charles Bonello, Stephen Spiteri, Joe Mizzi, Helena Dalli, Glen Bedingfield  & Chris Agius.
