Sea transport: Malta-Gozo sea trips continue to increase - NSO

Movements between Malta and Gozoin 2016 continued to increase, with a total of 1,581 trips, according to regional statistics published by the National Statistics Office. This number signified an increase of 7.6% over the previous year.

Vehicles passing between the islands also increased by 8.2% compared to the previous year, while passengers went up by 392,328, or 8.3%.

During 2016, passenger traffic originating from Ċirkewwa was busiest on Friday and Saturday, whereas highest numbers from Mġarr were recorded on Sunday and Saturday .

The report also shows that the stock of fishing vessels at the end of 2015 stood at 2,983. MPVs (multi-purpose vessel) comprised the largest proportion of fishing vessels with 1,351, or 45.3% of the total. The largest registration group of fishing vessels was the MFC (Non-Commercial Fishing Vessels), totalling 1,947 vessels. The largest share of fishing vessels was registered in the South Eastern district accounting for 28.1 per cent of the total. Fishing vessels registered in the Gozo and Comino district amounted to 17.1 per cent of the total.

 

Data is also provided on yacht marinas. In 2015 there were 1,964 berths in total. The Creek Developments plc (Msida) yacht marina had the largest berthing capacity of 744 berths. This was followed by the Grand Harbour Marina with 250 berths.
