PD to contest casual elections, says new PN leader lacks ‘necessary qualities’

Sunday, 24 September 2017, 17:06 Last update: about 8 years ago

Although the Partit Demokratiku is fully aware that it cannot succeed in blocking the newly elected PN leader from entering Parliament and it does not stand or intend to gain another seat, the PD does not believe the current leader of the Nationalist party epitomises the necessary qualities. As such, it will instruct its candidates to contest casual elections when a seat is vacated to allow Delia’s co-option.

In PD's opinion, the credentials of the PN leader will not go far in giving credibility to the Opposition or the potential alternative government it aims to portray. Therefore, the executive of PD has unanimously decided that our candidates will contest the by elections. This option is open to all parties, including the Labour Party.

However, Partit Demokratiku was elected as a watchdog as part of Forza Nazzjonali and therefore feels morally obliged to intervene, it said in a statement. Partit Demokratiku will be watching the PN Opposition and Government alike, cooperating where necessary and pressing for redirection where required.

Partit Demokratiku said it is doing this for the good of the country and in order "to uphold the trust that our voters have placed in us".
