Labour Party says Delia made 'opportunistic speech' aimed at dividing country

The Labour Party has accused PN leader Adrian Delia of trying to divide the country by what they described as an "opportunistic speech" made in parliament on Monday evening.

Addressing a press conference at the Labour Headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne and MP Robert Abela said that Delia's speech was the complete opposite of Joseph Muscat's.

"On one hand, the Prime Minister speaks of unity, and then we have Adrian Delia who all he wants is to point fingers. Delia's speech tried to unite a party by dividing a country," Abela said.

"He tried to destroy whatever Daphne represented. He tried to silence her with five libels in his very short political career so far. His speech was politically false. He tried to instigate hate by calling her, for example, a simple blogger."

Abela said that his speech was written by someone else other than the PN leader. "To keep attacking the police force at this very delicate time, is very dangerous", he added.

Abela said that it is ironic for Delia to speak about prostitution when the Daphne Caruana Galizia alleged the PN leader was making financial gains out of prostitution and deposited them in offshore accounts.

"On the other hand, the Prime Minister addressed parliament with a speech of unity. Our priority is justice not political mileage."

Reiterating what Joseph Muscat said in parliament, Abela asked why did Delia drop the libels. "Surely not out of respect to the victim."

Once again the Labour Party is challenging the PN leader to request an inquiry into the allegations made by the blogger in Delia's regard.

Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne said that this is a very serious period in our lifetime. This was an attack against what we stand for as Maltese, he said. "It was not an attack on a segment of the country. Delia is strategically mistaken. This is a very significant moment in history and the future generations will judge us on what the country leaders do."

"When such crimes happened in other countries, the nation united. This is what we have to aim for."
