28 bomb explosions since 2003, 26 listed as unsolved by police

Since 2003 there have been a total of 28 bomb explosions in the Maltese islands, and thus far 26 remain unsolved according to information provided by the police.

This newsroom asked the police for statistics regarding bomb explosions, to identify the year they occurred and to provide a brief description, such as locality. Lastly, this newsroom asked the police to highlight which ones were solved and unsolved.

The statistics show that a total of six people were killed by bomb blasts. In addition, since 2003 six people were grievously injured by bomb blasts while five were slightly injured.

The latest person to be killed by a bomb explosion was journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was brutally murdered by a car-bomb while exiting her home in Bidnija on 16 October this year. Last Tuesday, three men were arraigned and pleaded not guilty to murdering Daphne Caruana Galizia with a car bomb on 16 October. The men accused are Vince Muscat, 55, known as 'il-Kohhu', Alfred Degiorgio, 52, 'il-Fulu' and George Degiorgio, 54, 'ic-Ciniz'.

In some of the latest incidents, Victor Calleja was killed on 29 January 2017 when a bomb in his car detonated in Marsa, while John Camilleri, known as Giovanni tas-Sapun, was killed on 31 October 2016 when a bomb detonated under his seat. Martin Cachia was killed via a bomb in his car on 16 January 2016. In June 2014 Darren Degabriele died from wounds sustained by a bomb under his car. Angela Bondin, was killed after a bomb went off in Zejtun on 18 June 2005.

The two cases listed as solved by the police includes the case of Angela Bondin, and the second regards a bomb detonation in Zebbug 8 April 2010.

The last five bomb explosions to occur in Malta are all listed as vehicle based bombs, and a total of six of such explosions occurred since 2016. The total number of vehicle based bomb explosions since 2003 stands at 10, according to the information provided by the police.

Of the 28 bomb explosions, six are listed as homicides, four are listed as attempted homicide and the rest are listed as damage by explosion and wilful damage by explosion.
