Elderly man from Kalkara finds religious window display covered in eggs

An elderly man residing in Kalkara, after spending the day setting up a window facing the street in his home with religious statues to commemorate Holy Week, was shocked to find that it had been pelted with eggs overnight.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, described his shock and disgust when at around 11-12pm at night, he heard loud noises against the facade of his house. After going outside to inspect the disturbance, he found that the window had been pelted with a large quantity of eggs which left a putrid stench.

He described how he spent the entire day setting up his window and could not understand who would want to carry out such a pointless and disrespectful act of vandalism.

Maltese and Gozitans have been setting up the front windows in their homes for Good Friday and to celebrate Christmas for years, as part of the country’s religious traditions.

He described how next door, two elderly women’s front door, where religious figures were also displayed, had suffered the same fate. Their front door, however, had been pelted with even more eggs than his window had.

The man said that he called the police as soon as he realised what happened, and thanked them for their patience and kindness. He said they even offered to help him clean up the mess left behind by the vandals.
