Minister for European Helena Dalli ‘continuously engages with members of all EU institutions on various matters and intends to continue doing so in Malta’s interest’, a ministerial spokesperson has told The Malta Independent following the damning condemnation from MEPs regarding the allegations made within the Daphne Project.

The Minister was contacted after MEP Sven Giegold The European Parliament’s delegation concerning rule of law will be returning to the country in a statement entitled ‘Malta: EP will respond forcefully’.

He also revealed that the MEPs who form part of the mission decided to write to the new head of Europol, for a meeting in order to promote their involvement in the investigations.

Asked to comment specifically about the remarks, the spokesperson said that “Government is always willing to discuss the significant amount of reforms which have been, and will continue to be, implemented to further strengthen the rule of law, of which a basic requirement is the respect towards independent institutions and their ongoing investigations without prejudicing their outcome.”

On Thursday, Minister Dalli avoided questions from the press on the matter, who approached her after she emerged from a restaurant at the same time a protest in front of the Valletta Police Station was taking place.
