Doctors express concern about lack of road safety

Tuesday, 24 April 2018, 07:39 Last update: about 7 years ago

Doctors for Road Safety (D4RS) together with the Medical Association of Malta (MAM) said they are deeply concerned about the lack of improvement in Malta's road safety record.

This is evidenced mainly by the consistent trend of fatal road traffic accidents, and by similar trends in non-fatal, but grievous injuries resulting from such accidents, the statement said.

This certainly does not bode well for the ultimate targets of the 2014 Malta Road Safety strategy which pledged a 50% reduction in traffic fatalities. Similar targets of 30% reduction in grievous injuries and 20% in slight injuries are nowhere near expected.

D4RS and MAM are calling on the relevant authorities to urgently address this issue of major importance and bring it to the highest priority on the National agenda. A definite solution is needed for this preventable epidemic."
