A fairytale Irish wedding in Malta

Last week saw the wedding of Colin Robb and Louise Anderson, an Irish couple who not only fell in love with each other but also Malta and decided to make it their wedding destination. The couple were so sure Malta was going to be the dream destination for them that they hadn’t even seen their wedding venue until the day before the big day.

While organising a wedding in a place you haven’t seen thousands of miles from home may be deemed as highly stressful for many, Louise noted she felt in capable hands with their chosen wedding organiser and would highly recommend the experience.

“We were looking around online and once we saw the photos of the venue beneath Mdina, we instantly knew we wanted to get married there.”

The couple who, in fact met each other at a wedding 3 and half years ago, felt a strong affinity with Malta as both of their late grandparents had loved the Maltese Islands. “We came on holiday and fell in love with the island, the people and the food, everyone we have met is so kind and helpful,” Colin added. “We knew instantly we would return to get married here.”

The ceremony and reception took place at 4pm on Tuesday 5 June, over 70 guests flew out to witness the marriage. Louise wore a dress by designer Justin Alexander. “The dress came to Malta in a box in the hold of the plane, I was quite worried about that,” she remarked.

However that seemed the least of the couples worries at the time as groom Colin had forgotten to pack his suit. In a last-minute airport dash, he had left it at home, requiring panicked calls to friends and family flying out after them to bring the suit in time for the big day.

The day ran smoothly, guests were equally impressed with Malta and the uniqueness of the event. Enjoying a 5-course meal by, the couple decided to throw in a Maltese touch by offering traditional Maltese dishes. The venue itself was adorned with white linens and a theme of dainty bumble bees.

The besotted pair saw the wedding photos taken around The Silent City, “She looked absolutely gorgeous,” gushed Colin. Louise and Colin’s baby son Harrison also enjoyed the role of a page boy alongside an equally adorable flower girl. The couple who both work in business management in Portadown Ireland, couldn’t recommend the Maltese wedding experience enough for those looking to marry in the Mediterranean.

An uncle of the family had handmade every bouquet using artificial flowers and packed them from Ireland. Music was provided by local violinist Mark Rapa.  After spending the weekend in a farmhouse in Gozo, the happy couple will be enjoying a separate honey moon in Nice in August.

Statistics from the National Statistics Office Malta recorded over the last three years have seen a sharp rise in the number of foreign couples choosing to marry in the Maltese Islands.
