Part of Comino earmarked as camping area by summer

Thursday, 10 January 2019, 15:19 Last update: about 6 years ago

The Ministry for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change will commence works on Comino in the area known as Tal-Ful, so that by summer this area will start being used for camping purposes. This is being carried out as part of the implementation of the Management Plan for ‘Comino and the surrounding islands’ prepared by ERA.

This site will be operated and managed by Ambjent Malta. During the coming weeks, works will commence to rehabilitate the area which will include cleaning and floor levelling, installation of containers for the disposal of waste, indigenous tree planting - so that the site can accommodate the required functions with the least possible environmental impact. It is estimated that the works in this site should be completed by May 2019. The Ministry for the Environment points out that camping in Comino will only be permitted in this area.

Regeneration and rehabilitation works will also commence in the Important Ecological Area near Santa Maria Bay. For many years irresponsible actions took place in this area which led to serious environmental damage. These works will be coordinated by Ambjent Malta under the supervision of ERA.

Minister Herrera stressed that as a nation we need to recognise the fact that while it is important to enjoy nature through various activities, such activities must be carried out with more responsibility and with the least possible ecological impact.
