PD says pre-historic heritage under assault for short-term gain

Tuesday, 23 April 2019, 10:10 Last update: about 6 years ago

Partit Demokratiku warned today that Malta and Gozo's pre-historic heritage is under increasing assault for short-term gain. This obliteration of our origins is not only a loss for our country, but for the world. Repeated undervaluing and inconsistent analyses of our heritage is leading to the irreversible erosion of thousands of years of history overnight, PD said in a statement

Partit Demokratiku said that permits are being given which do not respect the limitations placed on them by the relevant authorities. The report of the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage clearly stated that in the AX Holdings development at Tal-Qares, Mosta "construction should not damage the features on the south side of the field", singling out the "vine trenches" and "a rock cut pit of undetermined function" for preservation.

The general public has taken to social media outlining their concerns that these archaeological features at Tal-Qares might have been destroyed already. Partit Demokratiku asks what happened to the conditions outlined for the development, and if the development which has just been approved adjacent to the site, PA/01383/18, will similarly bulldoze priceless heritage.

Partit Demokratiku is for people before profit, and for quality of life of the general public to be emphasized before the enrichment of a select few. Partit Demokratiku wishes to safeguard our community and our mental as well as physical wellbeing, which go hand in hand with the protection of our heritage and environment. For us to feel a sense of connection and belonging to our country, we must not sell off our patrimony for any short-term gain.
