Sunday, 16 October 2022, 07:23 Last update: about 3 years ago

Teatru Malta walk us through the mystical stories of the characters, from their upcoming October show L-Gharusa ta’ Guzè Diacono in the words of director and writer Immanuel Mifsud

Sister Wistina played by Marceline Galea

When she was in her twenties Sister Wistina fell in love with a gentleman a few years older than her. One day, while the two lovers were walking by the sea hand in hand, Wistina, with one hand holding her lover's and the other one holding a bouquet of her favourite violets, had her whole world tragically turned upside down when her purple bouquet fell into the sea. While her lover gallantly attempted to pick up the dropped flowers, he slipped, hit his head and drowned right in front of her. Wistina, shocked and unable to process what had happened, refused to speak after this tragic accident, with the exception of a few utterances that requested that she join a monastery with the hope of devoting her life and her passions to Christ.

Sister Tarċisja played by Moira Muscat

Little is known about the life of Sister Tarcisja. For some time, rumors persisted that when she was young she had a lover who had left her for another young lady. Some also said that Tarcisja had a secret relationship with a married man. Although the vocation to the monastery came to her relatively late, Sister Tarcisja was one of the most important and devout sisters in her monastic community.

Marija played by Charlotte Formosa

Forced into the monastic life by her parents, Marija did everything in her power to escape the life she was sworn into by her parents in the hopes of running away with her rejected lover. One day, however, inspired by the vision of the mystic Sister Augustine, Marija becomes overwhelmed with grace and accepts, with great conviction, to take her monastic vows and fully embrace her life within the monastery.

Joseph 'Tuteppi' played by Jacob Piccinino

Joseph, better known as Tuteppi, never found a job or really had any friends until he began to frequent the monastery, where he sought refuge in maintaining its garden and seeing to the daily needs of the nuns. Later in his life he began to narrate certain incidents that had taken place in the monastery, some of which turned out to be quite scandalous, but no one ever took poor Tuteppi seriously...possibly until now

L-Għarusa", a free adaptation of Ġużè Diacono's original play by Immanuel Mifsud will be staged at the Knight's Armoury in Birgu in co-production with Heritage Malta and supported by Fondazzjoni Ċelebrazzjonijiet Nazzjonali and Arts Council Malta between the 21st and 31st of October 2022.
