The University of Malta Academic Staff Association (UMASA) has said that it supports teachers in their action for better working conditions and pay.
The Malta Union of Teachers on Monday, following a one-day strike, said that it is going to suspend its directives from Wednesday, to enable further discussions and solutions to the dispute with government.
Educators in state and Church schools across the country did not report for work on Monday, as part of a strike directive issued by the Malta Union of Teachers. The MUT announced a string of directives which included the one-day strike, as negotiations between them and the government over a new collective agreement stalled.
UMASA has said that :"It is widely held that teachers' working conditions are students' learning conditions, and UMASA asserts that improving working conditions in schools is in the best interests of all involved - teaching staff, as well as students. As educators, UMASA asks the government to accord education the central importance it deserves."
