PN MEPs Will make Malta’s voice heard in Europe, says Lawrence Gonzi

Malta Independent Monday, 19 April 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Addressing party supporters at the Mosta PN Club, Dr Gonzi said that with the assistance of the European People’s Party – the largest party within the European Parliament – Malta’s representatives are in a better position to make Malta’s voice heard than any of the other MEP candidates contesting the 12 June election. He said the 12 June election should be taken very seriously because it is Malta’s first opportunity to choose the right representatives as a European Union member state. The choice of Malta’s five representatives at the European Parliament has to be taken carefully for Malta to really get the best of EU membership, he said.

He also expressed his pride that the eight candidates fielded by the PN are people from all walks of life since the country was careful to choose the best people, including two women and even one candidate from Gozo. The latter decision, he said, proves that Gozo is truly an important element in the development of national policies.

Dr Gonzi said the eight candidates fielded by the PN have always been consistent because they have always been in favour of the EU. The Malta Labour Party has candidates who, one year ago, were trying to convince the Maltese electorate to vote against the EU, he said.

And since Mosta residents will also have to vote to elect their local government for the next three years, Dr Gonzi said that it was the PN which introduced local councils and was really in their favour so a vote for PN candidates in this election is also important.

In reply to the question why should people vote for Malta’s MEPs, Dr Gonzi said the Maltese have to choose the best ambassadors to represent Malta at the EP, one of Europe’s most important institutions. A vote for PN candidates shows that we really believe in Europe, he said.
