Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said that the people have understood that they were "lied to," and said that they "deserve better."
He was speaking to the press at the counting hall in Naxxar at the end of the third day of vote-counting. The PN decreased the vote gap from 47,000 in 2019, to 20,000. On Friday it emerged that the PN won majorities in two more localities held by the PL, meaning that in total six localities that were previously held by the Labour Party during the elections have been won by the PN.
Grech began said that today's results were achieved thanks to everyone's work and that "there is no leader" since everyone is indispensable to the work the PN has done and continues to do.
With regards to specific localities, Grech said that decrease in voter gap aside, they received a majority of 12% in Mosta and a switch from a Labour to PN majority in Zebbug (Gozo). He went on to say that the people of Siggiewi sent a clear message to the government to refrain from attempting to take their right to choose their councillors. In light of this, he said that work must be done towards elections that are "more free and more democratic, for the good of the people".
Grech said that, though "this isn't a football game", the PN not only reached its goals but strongly exceeded them and said that it is a great advance on every level, with the vote gap dropping down from 47,000 to under 20,000. He pointed out that in the MEP elections the vote gap reduced even more drastically.
Grech reiterated that the PN must keep on working seriously and with "its feet on the ground". He stressed that the party must work with respect towards the people and said that he doesn't want excessive euphoria since "this is not a win for the PN but [all Maltese] who want a change". He reiterated that the PN will keep on working to bring change to a country and a people who deserve better.
Grech elaborated that in the local council elections, the PN saw an adversary who lied to their own people and said the people understood this and that they deserve better. He added that the vote gap was even lower in the MEP elections and still "[Labour] continued to obscure the truth"
In conclusion, Grech said that the PN will push on according to its electoral plan. He said that they will keep their promise for a carrying capacity study for every locality to be carried out in order to understand whether that locality can keep on being developed without detracting from the quality of life of the residents, as well as other proposals specific to each locality.
