Regional Road Speed SCAMeras?

Malta Independent Tuesday, 20 April 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 23 years ago

The Malta Independent yesterday inspected the area where the signs indicate the presence of speed cameras but nothing was found. If they are there, they are too small to be seen.

While we were there, we counted more than 100 cars which drove past at over 30kph in a 10-minute period and no police were seen stopping or booking motorists. These vehicles included motorcycles, rubbish trucks and tourist coaches.

Motorists in Britain recently raised the issue that speed cameras were breaching their right to privacy. How much more serious is the case in Malta when the speed cameras, which are said to be up and running, cannot even be seen?

Pictures of speed cameras found on the internet make it clear that the speed cameras in use in Britain are big enough and placed in a visible area so that everyone can see them. So where are the Regional Road cameras?

Over the past days ADT officials neither denied nor confirmed the presence of speed cameras along the road.

Earlier this week, The Malta Independent carried a story that the speed limits were imposed while tests on the bridges and the impact of speed on the concrete pillars were being carried out by foreign engineers. Since its introduction, motorists have complained that the 30kph speed limit was ridiculous and difficult to observe.

ADT will be holding a press conference this morning to give more information on the matter.
