AD’s election to the European Parliament would be a concrete step to reduce this polarisation, said their spokesman.
Referring to comment made by European parliament president Pat Cox, who has advised prospective members of the European parliament not to take the Maltese polarised mentality into the European institution, Dr Harry Vassallo said, “AD agrees with Pat Cox that Malta is an example of a bi-party system that is not found in the European parliament. In fact, through our actions during the past 14 years we have tried to put an end to this destructive way of doing politics. We have always called a spade a spade and we were always ready to build alliances in the interests of our country.”
Dr Vassallo reminded voters of AD’s strong commitment to Malta’s bid to join the European Union.
“In the last general election we even sacrificed our own electoral interests in order to ensure that Malta joined the European Union. AD, unlike the other two parties, was always ready to put Malta’s interests before partisan interests. Now is the time for Malta to become European not just in name but also in fact.
Unfortunately Malta remains the only European country with a two party parliamentary system. It is time this changed. Malta would gain more strength in the European parliament if it is represented in three rather than in two political families. All other European countries are represented in at least three political families.
“A major advantage of electing a Green MEP would be that he would be free of the bi-partisan and divisive logic which has earned Malta a bad reputation in the European Union”, concluded Dr Vassallo.
