Greener than green

Malta Independent Monday, 17 May 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 23 years ago

These traits are now apparent again in the new collection of his works called Green, thematically dedicated to plant-life. In his creative quest, Leaver has indeed shifted artistic sensibility from the rolling macro-structures in the sky (Blu 2002) to the static micro-structures of the soil, retaining intact his fresh sense of wonder at the magical silent workings of nature.

This is what the former Curator of the Fine Arts Museum, Dominic Cutajar wrote about this exhibition: "As to be expected given the subject matter of this collection, the dominant colour will be green in all its hues and tonalities, although eloquent infusions of blue, purple, red and yellow habitually enter the expressive dialogue. The rhythmic pulse is that suggested by the formation of the varied multiple plant-life, and could therefore hardly be more natural – as so often the case in other series formerly favoured by John Busuttil Leaver. Although faithful, and indeed accurate, these works are not strictly botanical statements, but they all share the throbbing mystery of life, effulgent dynamic structures flourishing modestly and often unbeckoned by human eyes that mesmerized by technological miracles, have lost the readiness to communicate with the playful intricacies of humble nature."

The exhibition will run from the 22 May to the 3 June 04 at the VGB Art Gallery in Republic Street, Valletta. The exhibition website is www.geocities.com/leavergreen
