Speaking during a PN social activity at the Buskett Roadhouse yesterday, Dr Gonzi said this sort of attitude showed that some Labourites had still not accepted the will of the people in that Malta is part of the EU. Dr Gonzi said this was simple use of underhanded tactics and partisan politics.
He also urged the electorate to make an intelligent decision for the forthcoming 12 June local council and EP elections. He said that the PN’s EP candidates had always been in favour of the EU.
The Prime Minister said that on 12 June, the public was going to chose the five people it wanted to represent Malta in the European Parliament.
He said that the PN’s candidates were from all strata of Maltese society and could represent everyone’s views. He also pointed out that they will be affiliated in the European Popular Party, the largest party in the EP which had affiliates from each and every member state.
“The European Socialists (PES), on the other hand, do not have such representation. And the European Greens only have 40 representatives in the EP, one of the smallest factions,” he said.
He said that it was important to give each candidate a vote, in order of preference of course. Dr Gonzi said Malta was already beginning to benefit from EU membership. “We are already seeing cheaper prices and a lot more choice and this is a sure-fire signal of progress,” he said.
