PN Are a party of hypocrites – JAM

Malta Independent Wednesday, 26 May 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Speaking at an MLP gathering in Floriana, Dr Attard Montalto turned redder and redder with anger as he talked about the way Eritrean asylum seekers were sent back to their countries by the PN government to face torture and abuse.

Dr Attard Montalto said that while Malta was small and could not take an influx of foreign nationals, only a hypocrite would send them back to a country where they would face torture.

“If it was a government in another country, it would have had to resign. Shame on you, shame on you,” he roared. “Get out of office. No one deserves the treatment you imposed on those people,” he said.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Leo Brincat also addressed the crowd and said that several reports by the Central Bank of Malta showed that not everything was rosy and pink as the Nationalist government was suggesting. “The MLP surely has no influence over the Central Bank, so I ask Dr Gonzi to either confirm or deny whether indicators show that unemployment, cost of living and taxes are going to go up,” he challenged.

Dr Sant is making a point of hammering it home to the MLP voters that a non vote in the EP elections is as good as a vote for the PN. “We need every possible vote we can get. We need your vote because we need as many MLP candidates in the EP as

possible,” he said.

Dr Sant said that Malta needed as many MLP candidates as possible to practice the same politics in the EP as in Malta. “We need MEPs to work to preserve the welfare state, we need people who will work hard to safeguard employment and our environment. We need candidates who will truly work hard for Malta’s benefit,” he said.

Dr Sant said government did not respect workers. “Government imposes taxes, lets companies such as Enemalta, Air Malta and Sea Malta get into financial difficulties and then blames it on the workers. Government does not care,” he concluded.
