In a statement, the chamber said that it had issued a directive to all lawyers to refrain from exercising their profession yesterday as a sign of regret and solidarity.

The chamber showed its appreciation for the fact that not only lawyers adhered to this directive, but also judges and magistrates.

The chamber expressed its sorrow at the death of a colleague and sent its condolences to Dr Grech’s family. It appealed to the public to provide any information it has on the case to the police so that the culprit will be identified as soon as possible.

The chamber also declared that tomorrow, 28 May, will be a day of mourning for members of the legal profession and lawyers are asked not to attend court sittings.

In a separate statement issued through the Department of Information, the Judiciary said that they had suspended all court proceedings after the killing of Dr Grech.

The Acting Chief Justice was informed by the Chamber of Advocates that they intend to observe a day of mourning tomorrow. As a sign of respect towards Dr Grech’s family and the chamber’s advocates, all sittings scheduled for tomorrow have been put off to another date.
