Food prices have gone down because levies (government taxes) have been removed and VAT is now paid after the product is sold.

The prime minister, together with the Nationalist Party EP candidates, visited shops in Valletta yesterday, giving customers the opportunity to speak to Dr Gonzi about the positive effect the removal of levies had had on their lives.

Dr Gonzi said the government will continue to work to give more life to the capital city through restoration projects.

He also spoke about the private investment of a passenger cruise liner terminal. Soon, he said, the tender issued regarding the installation of a lift between the upper and lower parts of Valletta will close.

Yesterday evening the prime minister visited Mosta. Dr Gonzi, together with the Nationalist Party EP candidates and the Mosta local council hopefuls, toured the area to spread the Nationalist message.

“The walkabout in Mosta serves as a medium for the Nationalist Party to meet with shopowners and families in the area and stay in touch with the community,” said Prime Minister Gonzi.

MEPs must be capable, competent and determined, he said, and the PN candidates have all these qualities. Furthermore, he said, they have the added support of the European People’s Party, the largest party in the European Parliament, of which the PN is a member.

Malta needs the best five people in the EP, especially considering that, for the first time, the island will be making its contribution to the drawing up of the next financial perspectives.

The prime minister also stressed the important contribution the local councils have made to the development of localities around Malta. In the last 10 years, PN local councillors have shown that they are capable of bringing prosperity to localities, he concluded.
