Dr Micallef was nominated for the post by the European Popular Party and he received 52 per cent of the vote during the Congress’ 11th Plenary Session.

The Nationalist Party said Dr Micallef’s appointment confirmed that being a member of the EPP had its advantages.

Dr Micallef said he was very satisfied at his appointment. He said that without the EPP’s support, this would not have been possible.

“My appointment shows the need for Malta to have a big presence in the largest EU political bloc,” he said.
