For the first time, the government has dedicated a ministry to family concerns, she said, adding that the important role a natural environment plays in the healthy upbringing of children was highlighted in the Convention on Children’s Rights.
With the construction of this garden, part of the little open space Malta has can be enjoyed by the whole family, said Mrs Cristina.
This garden will give children an opportunity to play in a safe environment, away from the violence to which they can be exposed while watching television programmes.
Through play, children develop their imagination and creativity, Minister Cristina continued. They are able to learn tolerance and interact with others.
The five-a-side football pitch will give children the chance to play, when the emphasis on studies reduces their time for recreation, she said. Mrs Cristina added that the garden can be used as a social meeting place for the elderly of Santa Lucia who live alone. They can spend time there and get to know one another, she said.
