Speaking at a discussion meeting in Mellieha, the prime minister noted that the PN’s optimism in EU membership has been justified. Economic statistics have shown that Malta is already reaping the benefits of membership, he said, which can be seen from the government revenue and expenditure for the first four months of this year.

The economy is gradually finding its feet. Unemployment was down to 7,700 in April, although this is still considerable, this reduction is definitely encouraging, Dr Gonzi continued.

The PN is a member of the European People’s Party and PN Secretary General Joe Saliba noted that the EPP will probably win by a majority in most European countries.

Speaking during yesterday’s meeting, Mr Saliba explained that not only is the EPP the largest party in the EP but it also has close to its heart the values the PN has always prioritised, like the family and the importance of life.

To compensate farmers for the lowering of their income as a result of the reduction in prices of imported items brought about by the removal of levies, and the resultant competition, the government is offering them financial support, said Rural Affairs and Environment Minister George Pullicino.

A total of 6,000 farmers have applied for grants from the Lm3.5 million offered by the government, he said. Only land that has been registered is eligible for this subsidy and the minister said 12,000 farmers have registered their land.

The prospective Nationalist MEPs who were also at the meeting spoke against the campaign of fear and negativity the MLP is running.

Simon Busuttil said the Maltese must grab every opportunity the EU presents and overcome any hurdles it puts in their way. David Casa spoke of the contradictory position in which the MLP finds itself. Up until yesterday, Opposition leader Alfred Sant was saying his idea of an EU partnership would have worked to Malta’s advantage more than full membership, said Mr Casa.

Dr Sant frightens people with what are lies, he pointed out, because the things he predicts will happen, such as the influx of foreign workers and rising prices, have not come true.

Joanna Drake, Michael Falzon, Joe Friggieri, Ian Spiteri Bailey, Anton Tabone and Roberta Tedesco Triccas also addressed the gathering and highlighted the reasons why people should vote for Nationalist candidates at the EP election.
