Two Romanian men have pleaded guilty to a string of thefts carried out across several localities in Malta over a six-day period in August.

Razvan Aurel Stefan, 44, and Niculae Vasile, 56, were arraigned before the Court of Magistrates on Monday, where they admitted all the charges brought against them.

According to the charges, the thefts took place between 15 and 21 August in Gżira, Sliema, Msida and Valletta, with the victims allegedly targeted for cash, identity documents and other belongings.

The first alleged theft took place on the morning of 15 August in Gżira, where items belonging to Oleg Stojicu were stolen.

Later that same day, between 9pm and 11pm, the men carried out another theft in Gżira, this time targeting Mayara De Nascimento.

The following morning, the pair stole cash, documents and other items worth more than €232 but less than €2,329 from John Jake Rice Singleton. That theft was aggravated by violence and by the fact that more than two people were involved.

Hours later, between 8pm and 10pm on 16 August, another aggravated theft took place in Sliema, targeting Antonino Finocchiaro. The charges state that the offence was aggravated by value, violence, the number of people involved and because it took place after sunset.

A fifth theft was carried out at Valletta's bus terminus on the night of 17 August, targeting Maximilian Joseph Petrosky.

The men were also charged over a theft in Msida on the morning of 19 August, involving cash, identity documents and other objects belonging to Trajche Andanov.

On 20 August, they targeted another victim, Edijs Valains, in Triq it-Torri, Sliema. That theft was also aggravated by value and violence.

The final theft listed in the charges took place in Valletta between 11am and 1pm on 21 August, when cash, documents and other belongings were stolen from Omar Amar.

Stefan alone was additionally charged with being a recidivist following previous final judgments handed down by the Court of Magistrates.

Both men pleaded guilty to all the charges, with the sentence being postponed to the 1 September.

Defence lawyer Lennox Vella represented the accused. The prosecution was led by Inspector Lydon Zammit, assisted by lawyer Clive Aquilina from the Office of the Attorney General.
