Speaking at a rally held at MLP headquarters, the Opposition leader gave the reasons why people should vote labour in the imminent elections.

MLP candidates will fight for the good of the people. The word “fight” should not incite fear but should show people that MLP candidates in the European Parliament will lobby for Malta’s national interest, he said.

The Labour leader said his party always told the truth and has often suffered for it. Although the party did not originally agree with Malta’s EU accession, he said, its members are now ready to grab every available opportunity to create jobs for Maltese workers.

Dr Sant said the party accepts the decision to join the EU and now wants to send its members to Brussels to fight for workers’ rights. He said the MLP speaks out about issues concerning the people, namely work, the environment, pensions and taxes. “We do not talk about frills and fancies,” the Opposition leader said.

The MLP aims to work for a social Malta and a social Europe, one that works towards more education and better services, Dr Sant continued. “In the last few weeks I have learnt that when the people feel cornered, they turn to the MLP, not the PN,” he said.

Dr Sant promised that his party wants to keep the pension system as it is for everyone, for those who are 50 and even those who are 30 years old.

The Opposition leader also mentioned the recent controversy surrounding Foreign Affairs and Investment Promotion Minister John Dalli.

“The prime minister is beating about the bush by claiming he is collecting information,” said Dr Sant. “It is Dr Gonzi’s duty to take a decision on this matter as soon as possible, a decision that prioritises the national interest,” he said.

The MLP leader concluded by appealing to all Labourites to convince others to vote Labour and educate them on the issues MLP is raising.
