Red Cross Society Appeals for help

Malta Independent Tuesday, 8 June 2004, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Apart from their dedicated volunteers, without whom this assistance would not be given, it has also succeeded in doing this work thanks to the help of generous members of the public.

The society is once again turning to the public to ask for help and assistance. It is taking care of the large number of refugees who have been given freedom of movement and are now in the open camp.

Although this is good news for the people involved, it has increased the burden of assistance. The authorities are still providing the two meals a day given to these refugees, yet this is only part of the refugees’ requirements. The Red Cross needs to provide medicinals and general items such as soap, washing liquid, etc.

For this reason, the society has called on the public for its support in this urgent situation, which is becoming difficult to sustain.

The following is a brief list of some of the most urgent needs:

Medicinals (these could be samples provided by companies importing medicinals or other stocks which the society can dispose of immediately); vitamins for children; nappies for children; baby food; soap and shampoos; detergents; bed linen; towels and men’s clothes and shoes.

Anyone requiring more information on how they can help should contact the society at its office on telephone 2122-2645 or email at [email protected].

The Malta Red Cross Society will also be grateful for monetary donations to the refugee fund to assist in this operation and these can be made to the following bank accounts: Bank of Valletta Acc. 10214861012 and HSBC Bank Acc. 33143371050. Donations of Lm1 can also be made by sending an SMS on 617517. Cheques should be addressed to the Malta Red Cross Society, 104 St Ursula Street, Valletta, VLT 05.
